John Schmisseur is executive director of the UT Space Institute and one of the nation’s leading experts on hypersonic flight, its challenges, and materials used to achieve it. A 23-year Air Force veteran, he founded the High-Speed Original Research and Innovation Zone (HORIZON) group at UTSI to align the institute’s expanding research with that of nearby Arnold Air Force Base and tying in that research to areas of national security, of which hypersonics are the best example.
